On May 25, 2011 MSI presented a technical paper at the annual fuze conference, held this year in Salt Lake City, Utah. The paper was titled FIPS 140-2 Tamper Detection to protect Fuze Technology. This paper features the MSFIPS FIPS-140 Level 4+ Security Supervisor device, a standard product IC from MSI. Here is the abstract of the full paper.
As fuze technology becomes more complex, there is a greater need to protect the technology from unauthorized users. Prevention of reverse engineering of the anti-jamming techniques is needed. However, there is a problem in that any monitoring technology must survive storage requirements of at least 10 years. This paper will show how the use of the Mixed Signal Integration standard product MSFIPS tamper detection integrated circuit, along with magnetic and pressure switches will detect tampering of fuze subcircuits and trigger a charge to destroy the technology and still meet the storage requirements.
